Charlie Denney

Charlie is regularly briefed to prosecute and defend in the Crown and Magistrates’ Court. His experience includes

• R v NY [2026] – successfully resisted the Crown’s application to adduce the complainant’s evidence under res gestae forcing the Crown to offer no-evidence.
• R v MT [2026] – instructed in a high-profile case involving a woman who carried knives to Birmingham Christmas Market. Woman took knives to Birmingham’s German Market and told police ‘I’m going to murder someone’ – Birmingham Live
• R v LR [2026] – secured a suspended sentence for a defendant convicted of intentional strangulation and assault occasioning actual bodily harm relying on the guidance in R v ZA [2023] EWCA Crim 596.
• R v PJ [2026] – secured an acquittal for a defendant charged with assault by beating.

Charlie is also keen to expand his advisory practice having recently advised a police force on forfeiture proceedings.

He has completed the “Advocacy for Children in Conflict with the Law” course which has assisted in his representation of young defendants.

Charlie is a Level 1 prosecutor.

Charlie accepts instructions in landlord and tenant work. He has acted for social landlords in possession and injunction matters.

His prior experience of conducting casework in possession, homelessness, and disrepair matters for tenants has assisted him in his growing social housing practice.

He has also advised a local authority on service on travellers which enabled them to secure a possession order under the Mobile Homes Act 1983.

He is keen to expand his housing practice to represent both sides.

Charlie has represented parties in a range of hearings and applications including final hearings, non-molestation, and forced marriage protection orders. His thoughtful approach to negotiation has ensured matters have settled without the need for a contested hearing.

Recent instructions include:

• Advising a father on jurisdiction and serious sexual allegations.
• Successfully resisting an application for shared care after a day-long final hearing.
