Child Care Conference 2017:  Guest speakers confirmed

St Ives Chambers' Family Group would like to invite you to attend our annual Child Care Conference on Friday 6th October 2017.  This annual conference is an opportunity for professional development for public law practitioners who represent local authorities, parents and children.

Hosted by Jeremy Weston QC, this all-day event will also include keynote presentations from Elizabeth Isaacs QC with guest speakers Dr Andrea Goddard (Consultant Paediatrician) who will be discussing Fabrication and Induced Illness) and Hilary Kennedy (Psychologist) presenting on Video Interactive Guidelines (VIG) techniques for parents in care proceedings.

Jeremy Weston QC

Jeremy Weston is Queen’s Counsel specialising in all aspects of family law. He represents local authorities, parents and children (via Children's Guardians) at first instance and appellate level. He is well attuned to the needs of the client and is highly regarded for his approachable and personable manner, including his capacity to explain complex issues clearly.

He is a charming and highly persuasive advocate capable of quickly distilling the relevant issues and is always meticulously prepared. He has enormous experience in cases involving complex medical issues and the cross examination of experts.  He recently had an article published in the British Medical Journal which provided clarity for healthcare professionals, teachers and social care professionals on the law as it relates to child Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) to read the article press here

Mr Weston has expertise in the most complex of care cases, including:

Keynote speakers

Elizabeth Isaacs QC

Elizabeth is an engaging and knowledgeable advocate who quickly identifies the practical implications of complex cases involving all aspects of child law, including a strong appellate practice. She has an established reputation for compassionate client care, excellent advocacy and forensic preparation, and a pragmatic and tactical approach.

Elizabeth has substantial expertise in acting for all parties in legally and factually complex care, adoption (including revocation) and wardship proceedings and has a detailed knowledge of the legal and social care issues relating to local authority planning and decision making for children.

Elizabeth has particular interest in –

·                  Child death

·                  Serious physical injury, including non-accidental head injury

·                  Sexual abuse

·                  Fabricated and induced illness (FII)

·                  Insulin poisoning

·                  Judicial Review

·                  Human rights issues relating to children

·                  Disclosure and public interest immunity (PII) issues relating to children.

Dr Andrea Goddard (Consultant Paediatrician)

Dr Goddard is a Consultant Paediatrician specialising in Child Protection and Children’s Services.  Based at St Mary’s Hospital London, she is a Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College.  

Hilary Kennedy

Hilary Kennedy is a Psychologist specialising in training, supervising and consulting on the implementation of Video Interaction Guidance (VIG). She is experienced as an Educational psychologist delivering interventions in troubled families and schools and training others at Universities and in practice to develop skills and understanding of Video Interaction Guidance. 

Her specialties: Supervising and examining theses related to VIG, Key note speaker on VIG, Writer about VIG, trainer in VIG.
